Although I often find myself taking on leadership roles irrespective of what position I hold, the following experiences exemplify my ability to excel in leadership positions.
NeurAlbertaTech is a neurotechnology focused student group that I cofounded in February 2019 with other undergraduate students at the University of Alberta. The group is a local student chapter of the NeuroTechX network (originally formed in Montreal in 2015) as such we are now connected with similar chapters all across the world.
Originally our group formed solely as a project team for competing in international neurotech competitions, we have maintained that mandate, but we have now also come to host hands-on workshops in order to teach all interested students everything from basic programming to creating a complete BCI.
I have lead or co-led 4 of the 5 major project teams between early 2019 and early 2021 and personally held weekly workshop for over a year in order to establish this as an integral part of the group.
NeuroNexus is a series of professional development and team building workshops structured around a 6-week interdisciplinary neurotechnology design competition, that focuses on addressing current gaps in neurotech in collaborative partnerships throughout the community. The year before I joined the administrative team, NeuroNexus was an initial pilot of the program (2019), taking place locally in Calgary, Alberta.
Despite the challenges of COVID-19, which led to the initial cancellation of NeuroNexus 2020, as the sole Director in Edmonton I personally ensured the competition was successfully brought to the capital of Alberta. This marks a large expansion of the provincial innovator network in the neurotech space, and further establishes Edmonton as a hotspot for neurotech innovation!
My day-to-day involved leading a team of 6 volunteers in the recruitment of undergraduate and graduate university students as innovators for the competition. Additionally, I engaged with experts from industry, academia, and medicine, for the recruitment of real-world problems that can be solved by innovations in the neurotechnology space.
